Metal Mother is the work of Matt Dorfman. I can’t find much information about the guy beyond:
(a) he’s a talented SOB, (b) he does a lot of editorial illustration work for Nicholas Blechman and Leanne Shapton at the NY Times.

Here’s what Matt told me briefly about this project:
“That invite was indeed printed on one big piece of paper that folded up into a standard-sized wedding envelope. Remarkably, it wasn’t nearly as expensive as it looks, since it only printed 1 color.”
Genius.
Not surprisingly, just yesterday I saw the wedding invitation on another blog (it might have been Quipsologies). Thanks for the link to his website!
I get excited when i receive wedding invitations. sometimes i also make customized wedding invitations.~~*
